Caffeine Overdose

Long sensuous fingers caress the horse’s mane

I watch, unable to tear my eyes away.

He leans closer, face inches from mine, whispers huskily

‘Coffee?’

I blush.

A little girl calls out, ‘Daddy?? Mommy needs you. Bridle’s broken!’

I’d rather drink Tea.

Her Choice

He’d left her.

And she’d slumped on the couch for days, lifeless.

Today, she washed her hair, removed the wedding ring.

Attended theater, learnt salsa.

She found out it was a matter of choice.

To live, laugh, be happy.

Even when alone

Fever

I lay in bed, exhausted, burning with fever.

A crash of pots, pans.

“Darling, omelette, dry toast. We ran out of butter,” he grins sheepishly, handing me the tray.

Then, he looks at me, eyes like smouldering embers.

I am in love.

The Exes.

Achingly alone. Together.

He yearns to hold her, she wants to melt.

He takes a step closer, his warm breath on her face.

Should she tell him about the baby?

Being Beautiful

Blonde hair, hour-glass figure, effortless elegance!

Everyone always stared at Emma from the Secretaries’ Pool.

She wanted to run and hide.

Mother said this morning, ‘You are fat. And ugly.’

Mark wondered, ‘Should I simply dive in heart-first and ask Emma out?’

00:00 Hours

Giggles, whispers in the girls’ dorm.

Chocolate cake, potato chips, ginger ale.

Muted squeal: ‘Idiot, you’re standing on my chess-board!’

Kruger trots in, tail wagging, followed by Floyd, the bantam goat.

Camp season midnight feasts. No woof woof, just cuddles and crumbs.

“Twenty years and I have always loved you. Marry me,” said his ex-wife.

“Darling, it’s been forty years – they never went back to the Moon,” he said.
